Clean rail components for maintenance

Bearing washing system for housings and cylindrical/tapered roller bearings in one intelligent system

Thorough cleaning of heavily soiled components is a key requirement for the maintenance of rail vehicles. Only clean components enable precise maintenance and reliable quality and crack testing. To meet these requirements, BvL Oberflächentechnik GmbH developed a customized cleaning solution for bearing housings and cylindrical and tapered roller bearings in a single intelligent system for one of Austria's largest railway and mobility service providers.

Two continuous flow systems in combination – safe handling without mixing up the bearing sets

In this specific application, two Yukon continuous systems are used. One system is for cleaning the bearing housings and the second is for cleaning the cylindrical and tapered roller bearings, which are connected to each other.

A special feature of the systems is an integrated counting register that prevents components from different sets from being mixed up. Each set consisting of bearing housings, covers, and the corresponding cylindrical roller bearings remains uniquely assigned throughout the entire cleaning process. This makes a significant contribution to process reliability. Both continuous flow systems operate in synchronized mode and are connected to each other via roller conveyors. This connection enables the automatic transport of components from the loading to the unloading station and ensures simple and safe handling.

Process and structure of the cleaning system

Before cleaning, the bearings are manually removed from the housing and placed separately in baskets. These are then fed into the respective cleaning systems. While the cylindrical and tapered roller bearings pass through the first system, the housings are cleaned and dried in the second system at the same time. The separate arrangement of the loading and unloading stations prevents clean and dirty components from coming into contact with each other.

Targeted and intensive internal cleaning of the bearings

The first cleaning system guides the bearings through various zones for cleaning, rinsing, and blowing off. A technical highlight is the lowerable nozzle system, which covers the bearings and enables particularly intensive and targeted cleaning of the interior areas. In the second system, the housings are completely dried by vacuum drying after cleaning and rinsing.

Individual adaptation to local conditions

The entire system is enclosed, ensuring clean and safe operation. The control cabinet was installed on site at the customer's premises above the system to save space. A small central control panel allows for easy operation. The design was tailored precisely to the customer's spatial conditions. Mechanical and electrical interfaces are optimally coordinated so that the systems can be smoothly integrated into the existing production lines. Direct customer support on site and close coordination during the project phase were made possible through cooperation with an Austrian partner company, Glogar GmbH.

Process reliability and sustainability

A well-thought-out bath maintenance concept extends the service life of the cleaning media and increases cost-effectiveness. In addition, various smart cleaning functions ensure energy efficiency and process reliability, a remote maintenance facility provides direct service support, and thermal insulation on the system minimizes energy losses.

Flexible system concepts for a wide range of applications

BvL cleaning systems are individually designed to meet customer requirements. Modular equipment options, such as combination with Geyser high-pressure technologyenable even demanding tasks such as the removal of clamping chips to be.

Cleaning processes are tested in advance at the company's own technology center and optimally tailored to the respective application.

In addition to the solution described here, the company offers a wide range of cleaning solutions for rail transport companies: from large-scale systems for cleaning wheel sets and bogies to specialized systems for motors, stators, and numerous other components.
